BSFL Kicks Off this Weekend
22nd June 2002
The BSFL 9-on-9 kicks off this weekend with two tournaments. In Leicester, the Eagles host the Fen Harriers. The Eagles, former champions will be keen to make amends for last season when they narrowly missed out on the playoffs. The Harriers, champions in 1999 and 2000, succumbed to the London Gators in 2001 in a tight semi-final. With no Gators in 2002, this could be their year again.
The other tournament takes place on the south coast, where the hometown Bournemouth Raiders entertain in a 4 team tournament also involving the Canterbury Coyotes, the Chichester Sharks and the Brighton Tsunami. Bournemouth, former national youth two touch semi-finalists, will be looking to go a step further than last season when a last game defeat to the Coyotes nudged them out of the playoffs. The Coyotes are hoping to go one step further themselves. This time to the title.
They reached the championship game in their first season before falling 21-14 to the Gators. Two new sides complete the tournament. The Tsunami will be playing in the BCAFL in the Autumn, and are playing to gain some match experience. The Sharks are very much an unknown quantity.
