BSFL Week 2 - Game Report

17 October 1999

Fen Harriers 86 - 12 Sheffield Lightning
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in Cambridge (for a change) the Fen Harriers put on an awesome offensive display to thouroughly dominate a reeling Sheffield Lightning team. The Harriers scored first on a Paul Griffiths 70 yard romp into the endzone and quickly re-inforced their lead with a quick fire pass from Martin Brown to Lawrence Tallon to bring the score to 14-0. Sheffield then managed to get their own offence going with a TD pass from Dave Stannard to Anthony Daley. Fen struck back quickly though with another TD hookup between Brown and Tallon. Sheffield then scored their second (and last) TD on a pass from 'Fez' to Pete Haythorne who spun away from a tackle and ran the length of the field for his first ever TD.

Fen then turned the screws and began to show what they could do on offence, Lawrence Tallon scored on a TD run and then kicked the PAT himself. Next was a powerful run by Jason Landgridge, followed by Tallons fourth TD, another run with the PAT pass caught by Niel Prothero bringing the halftime score to 40 to 12.

With both teams thin on the ground, the second half turned into a defensive nightmare for Sheffield as Fen scored 46 unanswered points. The scoring began on Sheffield's opening offensive drive, Martin Brown hauling in an interception and romping all the way into the endzone for the only defensive TD of the day. Niel Prothero caught the PAT attempt then went on to score two recieving touchdowns of his own. The Harriers spread the ball out well and 'Jiggy' was the next to score on a reception from Martin Brown. Not content with throwing for TD's Brown set off up the field on a broken play and ran a touchdown in for himself. The final TD of the day saw Paul Griffith finish as he had started with a romp into the endzone, the PAT saw Lawrence Tallon toss a pass to 2 point master Niel Prothero.

Doncaster Wildcats 14 - 14 Leicester Europa Eagles
Leicester Europa Eagles got their season back on track with a hard fought 14-14 draw in a long awaited match up against former Youth Flag Champions Doncaster Wildcats.

Eagles opened the scoring in the first quarter when QB Chris Wild hooked up with RB Craig Broughton to put Leicester 6-0 ahead. Doncaster hit back with Graham Lightfoot's long TD pass to Chris Mellors and the 2-point conversion gave the Wildcats a 8-6 lead. Further Doncaster pressure was held by a magnificent Eagles defence with Rich Manning and Tony Wilson both sacking QB Lightfoot to keep the score tight at halftime.

Eagles regained the lead in the third quarter with Chris Wild this time finding WR Chris Taylor who ran in from distance avoiding tacklers to score. A successful 2-point conversion catch by Craig Broughton made the score 14-8 to Leicester. The final quarter saw Doncaster equalise with another remarkable long pass from Lightfoot to Mellors to level the game at 14-14. A crucial sack on the 2-point conversion by Defensive End Tony Wilson kept the scores level.

Doncaster's next drive was halted when veteran Defensive Lineman Martin Gwilliam intercepted a Graham Lightfoot pass to give the Leicester side a last shot at winning the game. Despite moving the ball to the Doncaster goal line the Wildcats defence held and the game finished as an honourable draw between two fine sides.
